The Scottish Mountaineering Trust was established by Trust Deed in 1962 by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. The primary object of the Trust, as stated in the Deed, is "to promote and secure the health, education and recreation of members of the public by fostering among them knowledge of the geography, topography, meteorology, biology and geology of and proper technique of movement within mountainous regions of Scotland or elsewhere and an appreciation of their beauty and by affording opportunities for enjoyment of these regions"

courier logoThe Courier is one of Britain’s biggest regional morning newspapers and is an established title in east central Scotland. With four daily editions, The Courier provides in-depth local news for Perthshire, Fife, Angus & The Mearns and Dundee. Teams of reporters based in our offices in Dundee, Perth, Kirkcaldy and Arbroath have excellent knowledge of local issues and fill more than six pages a day of news from their patches. We also have a political editor in Edinburgh and specialist Business and Farming teams in Dundee.

In early 2012, we changed format from broadsheet to compact and increased overall content by a third including introducing a brand new business section, extending farming and giving twice the amount of sports coverage. Our Features team has developed weekly Property and What’s On supplements and a new Saturday Lifestyle magazine and midweek Motoring pull-out.

Other recently launched initiatives include Impact 100, which seeks to identify and list the most influential people in Courier Country every year and The Courier Business Awards, which are announced in November.

The Courier also has a significant digital presence. At the heart of our online offering is the flagship website www.thecourier.co.uk which covers breaking news from Courier Country, a selection of the top stories from the paper and a preview of tomorrow’s news. We also have a team of bloggers who react to stories every day and an army of Tweeters who bring their own eclectic views to the daily news agenda.

At The Courier, we believe that Local Matters and that is exactly what you will find in our pages and on our website.

Sea to Summit

Sea to Summit logo In 1984 a small group of climbers from the world's flattest continent pulled off an audacious ascent of Mount Everest - they put a new route up the north face in lightweight style with no oxygen or sherpa support. Six years later, one of the summiteers, Tim Macartney-Snape decided to return to Everest after he realized neither he nor any other person who had climbed the mountain had truly climbed the entire 8,848 meters, as that would have meant starting from sea level. That is, no one had yet climbed it from "sea to summit".

In the spring of 1990 Tim had a swim in the tepid waters of India's Bay of Bengal then set off on foot across the Gangetic plain toward the distant Himalayan foothills. Four months later, after climbing alone from Base Camp and without the assistance of oxygen, he set foot once again on the highest point on earth. Tim's solo ascent of Mt. Everest was named the "Sea to Summit" expedition.

Back in Australia, Tim joined forces with climbing friend, sewing enthusiast and design guru Roland Tyson to build a business that could make use of their knowledge of the outdoors to create truly ingenious, well-made but affordable outdoor equipment. They named their company Sea to Summit after Tim's expedition and the business prospered.

Today the Sea to Summit brand continues to provide innovative gear and serves a growing band of outdoor enthusiasts all over the world.

mba logoMountain Bothies Association - MBA -  (Raffle Prize). Founded in 1965, the Mountain Bothies Association exists to maintain remote buildings for which the owner has little or no use, yet remain important to walkers and others who make use of the shelter that they provide. We only own one of these buildings - Over Phawhope bothy. The remainder are maintained with the agreement and encouragement of the owners. All maintenance work is financed from our own resources, mainly membership subscriptions supplemented by generous donations from benefactors, some of whom wish to commemorate a relative or friend who was a hillwalker or climber.

The maintenance work along with the bulk of administration is carried out by volunteers. Each bothy in the care of the Association has one or more Maintenance Organisers who are responsible for arranging routine maintenance.

mountaineering scotlandMountaineering Scotland is the only recognised representative organisation for hill walkers, climbers, mountaineers and ski-tourers who live in Scotland or who enjoy Scotland’s mountains, and acts to represent, support and promote Scottish mountaineering. We provide training and information to mountain users to promote safety, self-reliance and the enjoyment of our mountain environment. We also campaign to protect Scotland's mountains and to protect access rights in those mountains.
Our funding comes from a combination of membership subscriptions, non-governmental grants and investment from sportscotland, which supports public initiatives and services in mountain safety, mountain weather forecasting, mountain training and the development and promotion of mountaineering activities.
